ESLE

Extended Supervised Learning Event (ESLE) are 1-on-1 training sessions that focus on non-technical skills. Each should take a total of 3 hours to complete – 2 hours of observation and 1 hour for discussion and feedback (including the completion of the ESLE form).

Where do they take place?

The 2 hours of observation should occur on the shop floor. The trainee will be working as normal (done during their clinical shift) and the consultant will be 100% supernumerary (i.e. not clinical). Feedback should occur away from the shop floor. iPads are available from the Education team to aid completion of the form if required.

Which consultants can do ESLEs?

All FRCEM consultants can do ESLEs for the RCEM portfolio. The 1st ESLE for all trainees must be done with their Educational or Clinical Supervisor within 3 months of commencing their post. A 2nd or 3rd ELSE can then be done by any other consultant.

How is the initial ESLE organised?

Trainees and their Educational Supervisor will set a date for their initial meeting. It is the trainees’ responsibility to inform the Education Administrator of when this is happening so it can be logged in the education diary (this includes if for any reason the timing of the session is changed).

How are the 2nd and 3rd ELSE organised?

Trainees can book their follow-up ESLEs using the booking system above, or by contacting the Education Administrator.

CBD Clinics

CBD clinics are run by consultants and education fellows. We have both adult and paediatric clinics. (some are paediatric only so please check!)

You are able to book into 1 slot if you are on shift. You will be allowed 30 minutes off the shop floor to attend. If you wish to come in on a day off you will be able to book into 2 adjacent slots (please don’t book to come in between night shifts as this will affect your rest period).

Your booking confirmation will tell you where the CBD clinic will take place. (Usually in the meeting rooms in the admin offices not downstairs in ED)

How it works:

  1. Select a case that either; you have found interesting or challenging and wish to discuss further, or one that fulfils a curriculum item.

  2. State the topic of the case when booking, or email the Education Administrator in advance so we know what you want to talk about.

  3. Have access to the notes when you attend

  4. Do some reading around the topic in advance

  5. Send a CBD ticket from your e-porfolio

Shop Floor Teaching

Shop floor teaching is run by consultants and education fellows. Education fellows focus on adult ED.

How it works:

  1. You need to be on shift for the day you choose

  2. The person doing shop floor teaching will find you during their teaching shift

  3. If doing a mini-CEX we will need to observe you seeing a patient

  4. We will then sit down and discuss the case, give you feedback and form a management plan

  5. Send a mini-CEX from your e-portfolio
